Super Y-League Royals Head to ODP National Camp
First-hand Look at Trials from Northern Virginia’s Gene Daniels
United Soccer Leagues Super Y-League ODP National Camps for their ’92-’95 boys began this weekend at Ed Radice Sports Complex in Tampa, Florida. Joining six other Northern Virginia attendees, U16 Royal Gene Daniels gives a player’s perspective on the start of camp.
After arriving in Tampa and checking into Mainsail Suites Hotel on Wednesday afternoon, the seventh annual SYL ODP National Camps began with a 7:00AM (ET) breakfast Friday morning. After breakfast, players were bused to Ed Radice Sports Complex for their first of several training sessions with their teams. Players then broke for lunch from 11:30AM to 2:45 PM before competing in their first of four matches they competed over the weekend.
Daniels: As the players filed out of the introductory meeting, there was one word stirring in all of our minds. That word was professionalism. At a new headquarters, the Mainsail Suites, and new facilities, Ed Radice Park, USL Senior Director of Youth League Development Jeff McRaney stressed the fact that in order to be treated as professionals, we must carry ourselves like professionals. In an attempt to sift through the players, put together an all star game, and eventually choose the ODP National Select teams, the camp has taken new form.

U15 Royals Stopped in Semifinals
Northern Virginia Edged 1-0 by West Coast FC
The U15 Northern Virginia Royals run in the 2008 North American Super Y-League Championships ended just short of the final match, falling 1-0 to West Coast FC in the tournament semifinal. A second half of relentless pressure was not enough to equalize an early first half goal, leaving the Royals just shy of their second final match in two years.
West Coast FC came out of the gates with burst of intensity, rushing forward at the Royals goal in the opening moments. Their pressure would be rewarded, as they struck paydirt on a shot the glanced off the crossbar and crossed the line for the 1-0 advantage.
The Royals slowly regrouped and gradually increased offensive pressure of their own. The second half saw the pace of the game favor the Royals, and the final twenty minutes featured numerous attacks falling just short of equalizing. The West Coast defense held firm, and the final whistle earned them the shot at the North American title.

Northern Virginia FC Teams Advance in North American Championship
The U17 Super Y-League Northern Virginia Majestics earned a hard-fought 2-0 result over the U17 Plantation SC to catapult them into the semifinal round of the 2008 Super Y-League North American Championship. Breiana White blasted home the second Majestic goal in the waning moments of the game, giving Northern Virginia the necessary goal differential total to advance to the next round.
The U17 Majestics faced a difficult task after dropping a tough result to MPS Cape Cod in the opening game of the tournament. A 5-0 drubbing of the U17 Rage SC (PA) girls gave Northern Virginia the chance to earn advancement. After holding a tenuous 1-0 lead for much of this morning’s game, White fired a missile shot from 25 yards out untouched into the Plantation SC goal, securing the wild card spot on goal differential in the u17 bracket.
Also qualifying for post tournament play, the Northern Virginia Royals advanced to the semifinals of the U15 boys’ tournament, winning 1-0 over Juventus SC this morning at Ed Radice Sports Complex in Tampa, Florida. The win gave the Royals, who also advanced to the finals of the U14 boys’ tournament last season, a two point edge over the closest Group A team, Parsippany SC, who finished the group play stage of the 10th Annual North American Finals with five points.
