The Northern Virginia Majestics dropped their second game of the season, stumbling 3-0 to the Tampa Bay Hellenic Saturday evening at the Ed Radice Soccer Complex in Tampa, Florida. Tampa jumped ahead with two goals in the first half by Hellenic forward Shameka Gordon to claim the home-side victory.
Gordon, the twin sister of the Hampton Road Piranhas’ Shaneka Gordon, earned goals in the 11th and 36th minutes, both off feeds from teammate Jasmine Johnson. Tampa Bay notched their third goal of the night shortly after halftime when Sarah Chapman touched home a pinballing rebound in the Northern Virginia goal mouth to send the Hellenic up 3-0.
After finding themselves down three goals, Northern Virginia finally showed some spark and launched several attacks into the Hellenic defensive third. Majestic forward Cate Tisinger threatened the Tampa net on several occasions and Northern Virginia’s Mary Casey created havoc on two close headers on goal, but the Hellenic defense denied the visitor’s from getting on the scoreboard.
The Majestics return home next Saturday, May 30th, to face the Cary Clarets at Hellwig Field in Manassas, Virginia. The Majestics are hosting a Pink Out charity event to raise money for the Mary Kay Ash foundation in its battle to end women’s cancers. Match time is set for 6:00PM and the first 200 fans will receive a Pink Out t-shirt.
