For the third week in a row, the Northern Virginia Majestics failed to find the net, falling 1-0 to the Cary Lady Clarets Saturday evening at Hellwig Memorial Field in Manassas, VA. Claret forward Lindsey Vera stung the Majestics in the 83rd minute, lifting Cary to the victory.
Unlike the previous two weeks, Northern Virginia seemed to find their flow early and established a solid attack throughout the first half. Several chances for Northern Virginia to score were created early, the most dangerous in the 20th minute when a through ball found Majestic Ashley Johnson a step ahead of the defense and racing at the goal. Johnson cut slightly right before firing her shot, a move that allowed Claret keeper Kelsey Kearney a good angle to collect the save and deny the Majestics.
The second half saw the visiting Clarets slowly build offensive pressure of their own. Cary’s game-winner in the final seven minutes began when a Northern Virginia clearance inadvertently fell into the middle of the defensive third, catching the Majestic defense out of position. Claret Molly Skinner collected the errant header and slotted the ball over to Vera, who cut around Majestic keeper Jackie DesJardin and calmly passed the ball into the net.
The loss drops the Majestics into the Atlantic Division cellar with a record of 0-3-0.
Northern Virginia has yet to score a goal this season.
The Majestics return home next Sunday, June 7th, to face the Richmond Destiny at Hellwig Memorial Field in Manassas, Virginia. Match time is scheduled for 6:00PM.
