The Richmond Kickers Destiny recorded their first win of the season, a 1-0 result against the Northern Virginia Majestics Thursday night at Sports Backer Stadium. A second-half goal from Colleen Schohl earned the Richmond victory and propelled Northern Virginia into last place of the Atlantic Division.

The Destiny came out strong in the first half, nearly scoring on a Becca Wann header. The Destiny striker seemingly latched onto a cross from teammate Kimmy Cummings in the first half, sending an apparent header into the back of the Majestic net. However, Wann was adjudged to have used her hand rather than her head in striking the ball. The goal was disallowed, and Wann was shown a yellow card for her troubles.

Northern Virginia’s defense settled in after the booking, holding Richmond to just two shots on the half.  However, the Majestics offense seemed sluggish at times and only managed to generate three shots of their own in the scoreless first half.

The Richmond defense played inspired, and their efforts paid off in the 70th minute when left back Sarah Hilt gained possession and connected up field to second-half substitute Colleen Schohl on a diagonal ball. Schohl settled the ball and beat a defender before firing a left-footed strike toward the Northern Virginia goal.  Majestic keeper Olivia Brown got her hands on it, but could not do enough to keep the ball out of the net.

The Majestics turned up the pressure after Schohl’s tally, but Richmond met the challenge admirably.  Allie Albright was in inspired form between the posts for the Destiny, recording five saves on the night.  Her biggest feat of the evening coming on the stop of a second half Northern Virginia breakaway to preserve the win.

The Majestics are now 1-7-0 and hold the fifth worst record in the USL W-League to date.

Northern Virginia returns home this Saturday, June 27th, to face the Charlotte Eagles at Hellwig Memorial Field in Manassas, Virginia. Match time is scheduled for 6:00PM.
